Nuestra Familia is Yours

Nuestra Familia is a publication of Buckner International. Wait! Before you click off this blog because you may feel that this publication does not touch your world, take another look!

Several years ago Steve Murdock, Texas State Demographer located at the University of Texas at San Antonio and now Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, predicted that by 2010 every other Texan would have Hispanic/Latino roots. Other demographers have claimed that Dallas will have more Hispanics than San Antonio by that same year. Cities like San Antonio, El Paso and Corpus Christi have between 60 to 80% and in the Valley of Texas those populations rates soar past 90%. We are quickly becoming a bilingual and bicultural state and nation as evidenced in the dramatic demographic shifts that are taking place right here in Texas and the USA.

In the Americas we are finding that Hispanics/Latinos are making their way all the way to Alaska, Hawaii, and into Canada. We are quickly becoming a bilingual and bicultural hemisphere. To make the point I have often said “In the 21st century western hemisphere you will either become bilingual and bicultural or you will be by-yourself.”

Nuestra Familia will be at the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas in Wichita Falls, Texas this year. Several years ago Felipe Garza led the way to inaugurate a Spanish-speaking publication for Buckner’s Spanish-speaking audience. This year we will be mailing Nuestra Familia to all 1,200 Hispanic congregations in Texas and we will also be distributing this publication at other state, national, and international locations. Visit Nuestra Familia to request your copy today!

Nuestra Familia means “Our Family.” The feel and texture of this publication is very Latino. Colors, stories, photos all exude the Latino flavor thanks to Analiz González, Russ Dilday, Luis Perez, and Scott Collins, Vice President of External Affairs at Buckner. You will find stories in Spanish of how God is transforming the lives of children and families in Honduras, Mexico, and throughout Texas and the USA.

Our Family is written to convey that Buckner exists to make life better for children and to promote self-sufficiency for families. We work hard to make life better in the here and now as well as the life yet to be. We believe healthy families remain healthy when they have the ability to sustain themselves. What are the implications of the current demographic shifts in Texas and the USA? I am not sure but you will be better off if you learn Spanish and learn as much as you can about Hispanic culture. It is a different world. What will Buckner look like in this world in the next 5 to 10 years? We are not waiting to find out. We are launching a Spanish Website this week. More about this new website on Friday.

Wow!! Beautiful publication marking a visionary effort. Congratulations to you, and especially to Felipe Garza for his leadership around Nuestra Familia. I am so proud to be part of una familia dentro de la comunidad de Bautistas de Texas that is wrapping its arms around the people who gave me community at a time in my life that has made all the difference in the world for me y por mi familia- I'm talking about los Bautistas de habla hispana aqui en Texas. Buckner is such a huge part of what makes me proud to have these Texas Baptist roots.

Gratefully,
Mark Grace

Bro. Mark, welcome to Nuestra Familia and thanks for being a part of la familia Bautista. Thanks for your words of affirmation. We are praying this publication will bless families all across Texas, the USA, and the Spanish-Speaking world. Blessings to you, mi hermano.
