This past Sunday, the members of South Main Baptist Church in Houston reached the 100,000 mark collecting new shoes for children and families through Shoes for Orphan Souls. Their shoe drives have produced 100,310 pairs of shoes to date since 2001 and this year their shoe drive produced 10,012 pairs of shoes. Of those collected, they sent 9,818 pairs of new shoes to our Humanitarian Aid Warehouse in Dallas. The shoes they kept went to homeless men in their Search Ministry; to Buckner Family Place in Houston; and the Main Street Emergency Coalition in Houston. Most of the shoes that were sent to Dallas are bound for Peru and the Dominican Republic. About 200 volunteers participated this past Sunday to sort the shoes collected.
Henry Hill, trustee emeritus of Buckner International and member of South Main Baptist Church (see photo) said “every pair of shoes represent a smile on a child’s face…and let’s them know that somebody cares about them.” Hill said this project involves everybody in the church…a hand’s on ministry that anyone can participate in. We are grateful for Mr. Hill’s leadership and his pastor, Dr. Steve Wells, for their leadership in this effort. Thanks also to the members of South Main for their time, effort, and sacrifice to make this project a success.
You may not be able to collect 100,000 pairs of shoes but you can lead a project like this that would make a difference in a child’s life. Would you consider an event like this for your church? Look up
